US Pledges an Major Aid Contribution, Issuing a Stark Warning to the UN.

With an announcement that mixes financial support with stringent conditions, the United States has vowed $2 billion to support UN humanitarian operations. But, this contribution came with a stark admonition for the global organization: it must "evolve or perish."

A Major Announcement During Wider Budget Reductions

The funding announcement was declared during a time of substantial cuts in US funding for global aid. Further cuts are expected from other key donors including the UK and Germany. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the announcement together with the UN's emergency relief chief.
