Ex-President Donald Trump has claimed that American military assets targeted a "major facility" in Venezuela in recent days. Yet, the former president did not specify the exact purpose or site of the target, and officials have issued no further clarification from his administration.
"US forces just eliminated – I'm not sure if you heard – they have a big plant, where the vessels originate. Two nights ago, we destroyed it. So we hit them with significant force," Trump allegedly said to GOP supporter and supermarket owner John Catsimatidis on Friday.
If a US strike were to be verified, it would represent the initial attack on Venezuelan soil since the Pentagon initiated a buildup of American strike forces in the region to interdict narco-trafficking operations that the Trump administration claims operate under the authority of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
This stated purpose of the military buildup has evolved into a blockade aimed at stopping the nation's crude oil shipments.
Trump has for some time warned that American military units are poised to escalate the operations by striking objectives within Venezuela, a tactic that would in theory require congressional approval.
Video footage shared on social media on 24 December seemed to depict an blast allegedly from an industrial area in Zulia state. However, the footage or the site in question has not been independently verified.
An source reportedly informed a news network that the former president was referring to a narco-trafficking site in his remarks.
The Venezuelan government has not commented on the event the former president referenced. Furthermore, there have been no independent reports from within the country about it.
The deployment of US military in the area – a position certain officials have called a maritime "quarantine" – marks the broadest naval operation of Trump's presidency.
Officials have stopped short from calling the action as a blockade, but have stated that approximately 15,000 service members are stationed across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, including a carrier strike group, F-35 aircraft, and Coast Guard cutters to uphold existing sanctions.
